In the wake of a recent Australian survey that found computer crime here is even higher than in the US, we feel it may be a timely reminder to everyone connected to the Internet to keep an eye on network security.
The results of the 2002 Australian Computer Crime and Security Survey on Australian businesses found that 67% of organisations surveyed had been attacked in the past year and the trend is unlikely to improve in the coming 12 months.

The relatively good news coming from this research is that addressing human factors appear to be as important (if not more) as expensive technology. People in your business need to be educated about the risks and what they can do to help keep your information safe.

Assess the risks faced by your business and then implement security policies to see these holes are plugged. US research found that around 75% of security funding has gone towards keeping intruders out, while it seems that up to 75% of breaches originate from inside the firewall.
Some simple steps to reduce your risk exposure in this instance are to simply get adequate virus protection software, keep it regularly updated and educate your people about the risks of opening e-mail attachments while on the company network. If you have a Network Administrator ask that they keep up with ascribing access rights to critical data, destroy dormant user IDs and orphaned accounts and reset passwords regularly.
