Have you received an “Important Notice” about your domain name in the mail recently? If the letter was sent unsolicited it is extremely likely that the offer is a scam and should be disregarded.

You can safely throw anything from the following vendors in the bin:
• Internet Registry
• Internet Name Group

As the administration of the .com.au namespace can be a confusing and dynamic business, some people have seen the potential for short term profits in accessing host information and targeting businesses with direct mail designed to confuse and encourage action. The ACCC has closed or is investigating a number of these businesses preying on the confusion surrounding this issue. If you have a .com.au website you will no doubt have received a few of these dodgy offers by now. To help you out, here are the facts:

• You CANNOT license a .com.au domain name for longer than 2 years.
• You must renew at this time.
• Any business making the claim that you can add your existing registration to this 2-year period is making false claims (for example, Internet Registry made this promise in their most recent mail-out and is now under investigation by the ACCC).
• You WILL NOT lose your domain if you don’t “act now!”
• .com.au domain names cannot be renewed until 90 days before they are due to expire and nobody can possibly steal your name.

You should be wary of paying for renewal at any earlier time. If you registered your domain name through Smartype we will keep you informed of the status of your domain, otherwise the accredited registrar in charge of your domain will contact you in plenty of time. Contact Smartype for more information or visit www.auda.org.au for a list of accredited registrars for the .au namespace.

If you receive any offers you are unsure of or have any questions about this or other matters please email info@smartype.com.au
