Internet jargon, what does it mean?

| Dial-Up | In the beginning, the only way to access the internet was to 'dial' in to an internet service provider using your computer and a modem. Today, most people favour broadband. |
| Discussion Board | Websites that people visit to discuss topics |
| Electronic mail that can be sent over the internet | |
| Forum | Websites where people can ask and answer questions on a variety of topics |
| Host | Web pages must physically reside on a particular computer. The computer that contains a particular webite's pages is said to 'host' that website |
| Instant Message | By using an instant messaging or IM programme, you can instantly send short messages via the internet to others who are also on the internet |
| Internet | The internet [or net] is a network of millions of computers that span the globe. Information can always travel around the network. This allows for almost instant communication and access to a vast repository of constantly updated information |
| ISP | An 'internet service provider' is a company that sells you access to the internet. The ISP will sell you broadband, a high speed connection to the internet |
| MYSPACE | A social networking site that allows users to make their own websites, which usually contain pictures, music and a blog |
| Network | A collection of computers that are connected to each other, allowing the users to interact |
| Online | When you are online, it means you are connected to the internet |
| Spam | Spam is the electronic equivalent of junk mail |
| URL | A 'uniform resource locator' is the address of a web page on the internet |
